For years now friends have asked about where they should go when the come to San Francisco. Where they might have expected a couple tips, I have tended to respond with great volume. To which I have been greeted with raised eyebrows and eventually gratitude as my friends make the appointed rounds. No doubt there will be opining on other topics. But home in this instance will be the decent meal wherever it may be found.
Tonight, the humble beginning is Refrigerator Stew. It's summer. So that means it freezing cold in San Francisco and once more I'm wishing I was the dude who realized how much money you can make selling fleece jackets with little pictures of the Golden Gate bridge to tourists. July is the height of the cold season here and so it goes. We're keeping warm by making a little veggie stew. Everything from Michelle's fruit box. If you're local you know the drill likely. Some smart people (www.thefruitguys.com) realized that lots of people would like to have fresh locally grown stuff just show up at their office for their eating pleasure. It's kind of magical really. You sit there and work and food arrives.
Then you're confronted with the question of what you actually do with cranberry beans, kale, carrots and potimarron squash when you get home. Turns out it makes a great little stew. Call it a thick soup if you want. But in a town where it's chilly enough to see your breath in the wind while the rest of the country is in the 90's, a little warm stew is just about right.
